I didn't have "the" guide to this either. I had to figure it out by trial and error.
Here are a few things I learned along the way:
Graduate school is meant to train you on how to ethically analyze and problem solve.
As a graduate student, you are literally creating new knowledge.
Seek a mentor that fits your needs FIRST, then think about the research.
Showing up at 20% energy counts just as much as showing up at 80% energy. Sometimes it's just important to show up.
Your field has its own language, learn it!
